Recently I discovered an article about communal living, the counterculture and the publication “Whole Earth Catalogs”. My interest in the counterculture movement of the 1960’s led me to seek some answers on what this catalog for hippies was all about. While reading various articles, I recognized familiar names like Stewart Brand, Buckminster Fuller, Marshal McLuhan, and The Merry Pranksters.
Created by Stewart brand and published from 1968 to 1972, and followed by subsequent updates. The “Whole Earth Catalog” influenced the environmental movement, computer technology, and easy access to tools and resources. I found that the people infuenced by, and involved in the publication of the “Whole Earth Catalog” were foreshadowing what the internet, blogs, and social networking are doing today.
